Birdwatching--Matagorda County Birding Center
This sanctuary southwest of Houston is a real birder's paradise. Located along the Colorado River, it includes 34 acres of nature trails, bridges, wetlands, woods, prairies, hummingbird gardens, and much, much more. Scheduled during the early fall migration, there should be lots of hummingbirds, hawks and other migrants. Celebrate a successful morning of birding with lunch at an area restaurant.

Birdwatching--Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1966, this refuge has long been a favorite of birdwatchers. It's an extensive 47,000-acre refuge with a varied habitat of prairies, salt cedars, marshes and lakes. Get some terrific views of waterfowl, rails, sandpipers, hawks, and more. Finish the morning with lunch at an area restaurant.

Birdwatching--Evening Birding on the Coast
This is an excellent trip for late rising birdwatchers. Starting at Christmas Bay near Surfside, travel east across the San Luis Pass into Galveston, as the sun sets. The cool evening breezes off the Gulf will make for a pleasant trip to a truly unique area. Look for piping plovers, least terns, black skimmers, magnificent frigatebirds, and more. Birdwatch until the sun sets; then enjoy a seafood dinner before heading home.

Birdwatching--Hawk Migration
Imagine the thrill of seeing swirling kettles of broad-winged hawks as they migrate southward along the Gulf Coast towards their winter home in Central America. Travel to the Candy Abshier Wildlife Management Area at Smith Point, a well-known hotspot for studying hawks as they skirt around Galveston Bay during their annual migration. Learn about the dynamics of hawk flight and why they won't fly over open water. Enjoy lunch at an area restaurant.

Batwatching
Summer heat driving you batty? Do something different. Witness the awesome spectacle of "billions and billions" of bats as they emerge from underneath Austin's Congress Street Bridge to begin their nightly foray. Participate in a true-life adventure to the Capitol City and dine in a restaurant on Town Lake before enjoying this awesome spectacle.

Surfing Port Aransas
Learn to surf in Texas. At Port Aransas, the water is shallow, warm and the waves are so rideable that, by the end of class, you'll probably stand and control the board. Learn on the traditional wide longboard. Camp on the beach both Saturday and Sunday. The big tent has privacy and your own comfortable cot. The sea breeze and surf sounds guarantee a good rest. Bathrooms and showers are within walking distance. NOTE: Young kids are welcome.
