Basics of Photography
With all the advances in photography, including digital cameras, you may wonder if there is any point in learning to operate a conventional film camera. It's still the only way to produce a 'photograph' with all its unique visual appeal. Explore camera functions such as F-stops, depth of field, shutter speeds, exposure values. Learn basic camera functions that apply to both digital and film cameras. Understand photocomposition and recognize the qualities of objects or people that make them photogenic. Each student is asked to complete a photo project that is shared with the class at the fourth meeting. NOTE: This class is intended for students who have a 35mm or digital camera that can be manually operated. If you own a camera, please bring it to class. You must attend the first class to come to subsequent classes.

Pushing Your Photography to the Next Level

Available Light Portrait Photography
Create simple images using just the light from a window. Turn off the flashes and unplug the studio lights. Learn how to create quiet photos with natural light indoors. We'll work in black-and-white or color, learning how to evaluate the face of the subject to accentuate the best features and create a pleasing portrait. Bring a reflector if you have one. Everyone in the class will be a model as well as a photographer. Please bring a tripod, your camera with one or two lenses and camera manual to class if you have them.

Using Your Flash--The Basics
Tired of washed-out or dark images when you use a flash with your SLR film or digital camera? Confused by all the fancy language in your flash manual? Using your flash to enhance your photos isn't hard once you learn the basics. Learn how your camera and flash communicate, how to understand the controls of your flash and how to avoid mistakes. In class photograph objects under low light. Bring your camera, flash, film or storage card, camera and flash manual and tripod. The tripod is needed to complete the class exercises. NOTE: Prior enrollment in Basics of Photography is recommended.

Photography at Night--Woodlands
You've seen it, now do it. The fireworks and the lights of the city will never look the same again. Use the buildings and streets near class to learn how to capture different indoor and outdoor lighting situations, how to get a correct exposure, and how your camera works under low light situations. Musts for this class are a tripod, camera with wide-angle lens, extra battery, flash, camera manual, small flashlight, film/memory card, small camera bag and comfortable walking shoes. NOTE: This course is designed for students with film or digital SLR cameras. Prior enrollment in 4642 or 4643 Basic Photography is highly recommended.

Macro & Still Life Photography
A successful photograph of a still life or macro subject is not often spontaneous. Good results come from planning and lighting. Learn how to plan your project and how to work with backgrounds and directional lighting. This class is for photographers who are very comfortable with f/stops, shutter speeds, and metering. Participants should bring: 1) a digital or film SLR camera, 2) dedicated flash(s), 3) tripod, 4) film or memory cards, 5) flash batteries and flash manuals. Participants will have more fun if they have one or two of the following: wide angle lens, telephoto zoom or macro lens, extension tubes, close-up filters, off-camera flash cord and cable release. NOTE: If you can, bring fresh flowers, a vase or some similar props. Prior enrollment in 4630 or 4642 Basic Photography is highly recommended.

Let's talk about how you can make money through a business that specializes in portrait, wedding, youth sports, or event photography. This class will include the technical specifications of a good image, equipment, building a website, posting images for direct sale, pricing images, licensing rights, copyright, sales tax, insurance, contracts, and much more.

Learn about Camera Raw, the application used to open and enhance raw images using exposure, shadows, brightness, contrast and saturation. Learn how to read a histogram and spot clippings. You'll also learn about the file browser, your mission central if shooting raw. This section includes an overview of metadata. End with ideas for a smooth workflow. Users of Lightroom & Elements can also benefit from the information presented. NOTE: This class complements the more comprehensive 8058: Adobe Photoshop.
